Ball & Young Connoisseur 8 is an 8mm premium carpet underlay designed for luxury domestic areas that receive regular use. It offers a comfortable feel beneath carpet while providing a firmer, more supportive base than thicker underlays.
This makes it a particularly good option for busy areas such as hallways, stairs, landings, bedrooms and living rooms, where you want comfort but also need the underlay to stand up well to everyday foot traffic. The Cloud 9 APT core has excellent recovery properties, helping it retain its shape and support beneath the carpet.
Connoisseur 8 helps reduce impact noise by up to 37dB and has a 2.3 tog thermal rating, adding warmth between the carpet and subfloor. It also includes Ultra-Fresh antimicrobial technology, which helps prevent the growth of fungi and bacteria while keeping the underlay and carpet fresher for longer.
Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, flat and secure before installation. Remove loose debris, protruding nails or screws, and any surface defects that may affect the final carpet finish.
Lay the underlay flat across the room, bringing adjoining lengths tightly together without overlapping. Trim accurately around walls, doors and fixed features, then tape all seams using suitable underlay tape.
Fit carpet gripper around the perimeter where required, then stretch-fit the carpet in accordance with the carpet manufacturer’s instructions. Connoisseur 8mm is intended for luxury domestic carpet installations, including areas with medium-to-high household use.

Ball & Young Connoisseur 8mm is protected beneath the fitted carpet and does not need routine maintenance. Keep the carpet clean and deal with spills or leaks promptly to prevent moisture reaching the underlay or the subfloor beneath.
When the carpet is lifted for refurbishment, inspect the underlay for tears, crushing or moisture damage. Replace damaged sections before laying the carpet again to maintain the intended support and comfort.
