Carpenter Powerstep 9mm is an extra-high-density PU foam carpet underlay designed for rooms where the carpet needs a firmer, more stable foundation. It balances comfort with strong support, making it a good choice for busy family homes, stairs and contract settings where regular footfall can put more pressure on the carpet.
Its dense 145kg/m³ construction helps protect the carpet from premature wear, while the 9mm thickness still provides a comfortable feel underfoot. Powerstep also offers useful heat and sound insulation, with a 2.6 tog rating and 40dB impact sound reduction.
The subfloor must be dry, clean, level and secure before installation. Repair loose floorboards, uneven patches and protruding fixings, then fit suitable gripper around the perimeter for a stretch-fit carpet installation.
Lay Powerstep 9mm in runs across the floor, ensuring the correct face is uppermost in accordance with any roll markings. Place adjoining edges tightly together without overlap or gaps, trim the perimeter accurately and tape all joins with suitable underlay tape.
Fit the carpet over the prepared underlay using the appropriate stretching method. Keep the underlay neatly cut back at doorways and use suitable threshold trims to provide a clean, secure finish between adjoining floor surfaces.

Carpenter Powerstep 9mm is installed below the carpet and needs no routine maintenance once the floor is complete. Before fitting, keep the underlay dry and protected from dust, moisture and damage.
Make sure the subfloor is thoroughly cleared of grit, loose fasteners and sharp debris before laying the material. These can affect the finished carpet surface and reduce the support provided by the underlay.
If the carpet later shows signs of rippling, movement or wear around entrances and thresholds, arrange for the carpet fitting and gripper to be checked by a professional.
