Carpenter Richstep 9mm is a high-density PU foam carpet underlay that combines a soft, comfortable feel with dependable support. It is designed for domestic carpet installations where you want the floor to feel warmer, quieter and more cushioned without moving to a very thick underlay.
The dense foam construction gives the carpet a stable base and helps it cope with regular household use. With a 2.35 tog rating and 42dB impact sound reduction, Richstep is a strong all-round choice for living rooms, bedrooms and other everyday spaces.
The subfloor should be dry, clean, smooth and secure. Repair loose boards, uneven areas and protruding fasteners before fitting, then install appropriate carpet gripper around the perimeter.
Lay Richstep in the direction that gives the best coverage, with the scrim-faced side uppermost. Position each run edge to edge without overlapping, trim it neatly at walls and fixed features, and seal all joins with suitable underlay tape.
For stairs, cut and fit each piece accurately so the underlay follows the tread and riser without bunching or gaps. Stretch-fit the carpet over the prepared underlay, securing it evenly to the gripper and finishing thresholds with suitable trims.
Richstep is a 9mm domestic carpet underlay. Its thermal resistance means it is not generally suitable for use over underfloor heating; choose an underlay specifically approved for that system where heating is present.

Carpenter Richstep is fitted beneath carpet, so no routine cleaning is needed after installation. Keep the underlay dry and protected before fitting, and do not use sections affected by moisture, contamination or physical damage.
Before laying the carpet, make sure the underlay and subfloor are free from grit, loose fixings and offcuts. A clean, even base helps the carpet sit correctly and preserves the underlay’s supportive feel.
If ripples, looseness or wear develop around stairs, doorways or other busy areas, have the carpet fitting checked professionally. The underlay should not be pulled up or repaired through the fitted carpet.
