Ball & Young Cumulus is an 11mm premium carpet underlay made for rooms where comfort is the priority. It provides a deep, cushioned feel beneath carpet, making it a popular option for bedrooms, lounges, living rooms and other spaces where you want the floor to feel softer and warmer.
The Cloud 9 APT core gives the underlay a supportive feel while the 11mm thickness adds noticeable comfort underfoot. It is also easy to handle during installation, despite its generous thickness.
Cumulus has strong insulation performance, with a 3.1 tog thermal rating and impact sound reduction of up to 43dB. This helps reduce the sound of footsteps and adds an extra layer of warmth between the carpet and subfloor.
It also includes Ultra-Fresh antimicrobial technology, which helps keep the underlay and carpet fresher for longer by reducing the growth of fungi and bacteria.
Fit Cumulus over a subfloor that is clean, dry, smooth and structurally secure. Remove loose debris, exposed fixings and surface irregularities before starting, as these may affect the carpet finish.
Lay the 11mm underlay flat across the floor, keeping all adjoining edges closely butted without overlap. Trim carefully around walls, door frames and fixed features, then seal the joins with suitable underlay tape.
Install carpet gripper around the perimeter where required, then stretch-fit the carpet using the carpet manufacturer’s recommended method. Cumulus is intended for luxury domestic installations where a high level of comfort underfoot is required. Follow current Ball & Young fitting guidance for the selected carpet and subfloor.

Ball & Young Cumulus Cloud 9 is protected beneath the carpet and does not require routine cleaning. Maintain the carpet above in line with its care instructions, and respond quickly to spills or leaks to prevent moisture passing through to the underlay and subfloor.
If the carpet is lifted for replacement or refurbishment, inspect the underlay for compression, tears or damp damage. Replace any affected sections before refitting the carpet to retain the intended level of comfort.
