ARDEX P 51 is a concentrated water-based primer and bonding agent used to prepare surfaces before applying ARDEX levelling and smoothing compounds. It helps seal porous subfloors, control suction and create a more reliable surface for the next layer to bond to.
It is suitable for a wide range of floor, wall and ceiling applications, including porous and dense surfaces. The blue colour makes it easy to see where the primer has been applied, and it dries to a thin, clear film once ready for the next stage of work.
The 5kg tub can be used undiluted or mixed with water, depending on the surface and application. This gives you flexibility and can provide coverage of up to 160m² per unit when diluted at the appropriate ratio.
The surface must be sound, clean, dry where required by the system, and free from dust, grease, polish, wax, water-soluble residues and other contaminants. Mechanically prepare the substrate where necessary before priming.
Shake ARDEX P 51 well, then dilute it with clean water at the correct ratio for the substrate. Typical ratios range from one part P 51 to half a part water for smooth, non-porous backgrounds, to one part P 51 to five parts water for highly absorbent cement screeds. Always confirm the correct ratio in the current data sheet before application.
Apply the primer evenly with a soft brush or broom, avoiding puddles and heavy pooling. Leave it to dry thoroughly to a thin, clear blue film before applying the next product. The ambient and substrate temperature should be above 5°C during application.

ARDEX P 51 Primer forms part of the subfloor-preparation system and should be covered by the specified smoothing compound, adhesive or finish once dry. Keep the primed surface clean and free from dust, dirt, water and site traffic before continuing with the next stage.
If the primed area becomes contaminated or damaged, clean and re-prime it before application of the follow-on material. Keep the container sealed between uses and store it in a frost-free location.
