Ball & Young Cloud 9 FR4 is a 4mm flame-retardant carpet underlay designed for demanding contract, domestic and marine installations. Its slimmer profile provides a firm, stable base beneath the carpet, making it a practical option where floor height needs to be kept to a minimum.
The underlay has a combustion-modified Cloud 9 core and conforms to European marine directives, making it suitable for projects where fire-performance requirements are an important consideration. It can be used in heavy and general contract areas, as well as in domestic and marine settings.
FR4 is also suitable for use beneath wooden floors and over underfloor heating. It can be fitted using either a stretch-fit or double-stick installation method, giving installers flexibility depending on the project.
Fit FR4 over a clean, dry, smooth and stable subfloor. Remove loose debris, protruding fixings and surface irregularities before laying the underlay to ensure a flat, secure result.
For carpet installations, FR4 can be used with either stretch-fit or double-stick methods. Lay the material flat with edges closely butted, not overlapped, then seal all joins with suitable tape. Use a compatible adhesive system where a double-stick installation is specified.
For wood-floor applications or underfloor-heating systems, follow the flooring manufacturer’s requirements as well as the underlay and adhesive guidance. FR4 is suitable for heavy and general contract work, as well as domestic and marine applications.

Cloud 9 FR4 is an underlay layer and does not require routine cleaning once covered by carpet or a suitable wood floor. Keep the finished floor dry and address leaks quickly, as prolonged moisture can damage the underlay and the subfloor below.
When replacing the floor covering, inspect the underlay for tearing, flattening or moisture damage. Replace any compromised sections rather than fitting a new floor over them.
